Kim- My parter in decorating crimes working on the center pieces
-----------------------
I had a moment last week where I felt like one of my characters—and I realized it’s so much funnier to write about these things happening to other people.
-----------------------
My belief in my ability to always do more, plus my admiration for our librarian, Claudia, really got me sunk in it this time. Claudia (who’s basically magic) asked me to help with the library’s annual Dr. Seuss-themed fundraiser. I’d do anything for Claudia—lucky for me, she’s so kind, she’d never need help hiding a body. So of course I said, 'whatever you need,' with full throttle enthusiasm and zero questions asked.
Which is how I found myself with second-degree hot glue gun burns (why do I struggle with adhesive so much?) and glitter embedded in my pores, driving down a rutted road with a box of cupcakes on my lap. My friend, who I’d roped into helping, sat next to me, balancing a bundt cake between her feet and a massive tart in her hands. My niece in the back seat, was doing her best to keep the rest of the fancy desserts from tipping over, while my poor dog was stuffed in the hatchback with twenty-two Yertle the Turtle-themed centerpieces. Life imitating art, right?
Somehow, we made it. Not everything looked as pretty as when we picked it up, but we pulled it off. My niece got her picture in the paper, our dessert dash raised a record amount, and I even got to take home the bundt cake. This misadventure may have had a happy ending, but next time, I think I’ll ask Claudia if she needs help hiding a body instead.
Amidst all the dessert and dog wrangling, I’ve also been finishing up Crumbs of Suspicion, a short prequel to Postmarked for Peril. This little gem, inspired by my aunt, is a fraction of the length of Postmarked for Peril, but somehow, it took me almost two months longer to write than the entire first draft of my novel! Yes, it was interrupted by other work projects, and it started out as a Christmas story back in November. But, you know…life got away from me, and here we are. But it’s finally, FINALLY ready!
Download it for free directly from my website. This is my first time doing a direct download, so let me know how it goes. Happy reading!
Turns out these books don’t just sell themselves. I heard that Amazon publishes over 9,000 new books each month—EACH MONTH! Getting people to find my book feels like that time I was stuck at an enormous mall, my bladder ready to burst, and all the bathrooms were closed because of plumbing issues. I ran up and down escalators, searching frantically for somewhere to pee. I passed one man so many times, he clearly thought I was stalking him. The entire episode was painful, anxiety-making, and overwhelming.
So, in the spirit of promotion, I’ve teamed up with some other awesome authors and am offering Crumbs of Suspicion alongside their fun mysteries. If you're looking for more great free stories to dive into, check out these giveaways!
